How to make your 2017 goals stick
Happy New Year!
With the new year for many of us comes new goals. The first of January invites us naturally to look at new goals for the new year.
Creating goals, SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, Time Bound) is important for your personal and/or professional life is vital to your success.
Once your goals are written down, here are three things you must do to make them stick. Without them the chances that you will not reach your goal and you experience disappointment increase:
1. Ask yourself, "Why is this goal important to me right now?" Write down the answer. Then ask, based on the answer, "Why is [your answer to the first question] important?" Write down your answer. Ask again, "Why is [your answer to the last question] important?" And so on... Ask yourself the why question up to seven times. As you move through the why questions, you are peeling away your motivations to get to your core motivation for why the goal you are striving for is important to you. When you attach your core motivation to your goal, you are sticking your heart to it with the stickiest super glue you can find.
2. Share your goal(s) and motivation(s) with a trusted friend. This will build in accountability. You may even ask that person to check in with you time and again about how you are progressing toward your goal.
3. Create a plan to reach your goal. Without a plan your goal is a wish. Take the plan one step farther. Write it down in your calendar. Break the plan down into months, then into weeks, and then into days. Ask yourself, "What must I do today/this week/this month to move forward toward the goal?" Write your answer into your calendar.
Make 2017 your best year yet!
